Enchanting Tuscany Trip

The Enchanting Tuscan Trip combines an enchanting region, fascinating walking paths, and the classic pleasures of Tuscany: beautiful landscapes, living history, sunshine, food and wine. Our easy day walks allow you to explore the timeless countryside with its perfumed olive groves, fields of brilliant sunflowers, and pastel coloured farmhouses framed by rows of cypress trees.

Your journey begins in the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence and continues through the famous Chianti wine region, exploring around San Gimignano and the celebrated Val D’Orcia, before returning to Florence.

Accommodation is very comfortable and full of character. For five nights you will be based in a classic, historical Tuscan country house (with a modern swimming pool).

From your comfortable base you will experience the essence of all that is Tuscany: open and undulating hills, medieval towers, sunflowers, endless vineyards, unforgettable Renaissance art, mouth-watering local cuisine, world famous wines and captivating hamlets such as the Etruscan jewel of Volterra and the little known, Colle Val d’ Elsa.

Walking
This trip can be enjoyed by just about anyone. The walking is graded easy to moderate and rarely exceeds four walking hours in a day. The pace is leisurely to allow for stops to visit cultural and historical sites and to explore villages.

Nonetheless, the trip can be varied to cater for visitors who prefer a more sedentary holiday. Walking can be replaced by strolling around, sitting in piazzas, shopping – or a variety of cultural visits.

On the way we stop in medieval Greve and enjoy a great walk to the most ancient hamlet in Chianti: the village of Montefioralle.
Our dinner tonight features delicious local produce and traditional Tuscan dishes made.
Overnight: country house in Siena countryside

Day 3 – San Gimignano

Walking - easy to moderate 4.5 hrs
Today our driver will take us to the renowned village of San Gimignano ‘of the fine towers’, one of the most spectacular Tuscan medieval hill towns, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We stroll along its attractive streets lined with ancient palaces to admire the stunning sight of the remaining 14 of the original 76 towers standing tall on the skyline.

After a lunch break in a typical Italian café we leave this remarkable place and take an easy walk following a section of the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrim road, through vineyards and past stone farmhouses.

Along the way we stop at a farmhouse for a short visit of the vineyards and a peaceful wine tasting, along with pickled onions, olives, oil and garlic bruschetta, Tuscan cured meats and pecorino cheese.

Then we reach our own charming country house. We can relax in the swimming pool or enjoy a glass of wine in the garden, soaking up the view over the surrounding hills.

Day 4 – Volterra & Colle Val D’Elsa

Walking - easy 4 hrs
Today we discover the attractive village of Volterra. Along the way we stop in the mediaeval village of Colle Val d'Elsa, a delightful walled town and home to Italy's finest crystal makers. We have time to explore the historical centre and the most characteristic corners of town before reaching Volterra.

Volterra is a vibrant town constructed defensively on a hill. Its history goes back at least 3000 years and spans Etruscan, Roman and Medieval periods. Wandering around the town it is possible to admire the workshops of the alabaster artisans. We visit a local workshop where we can see the hands of a craftsman create delicate and exclusive masterpieces, bringing to life the soft and fragile stone.

There is plenty of time to explore at your leisure this magical place, with the option to visit the fascinating Etruscan Museum where 3000-year-old funerary urns, ceramics, and filigree gold jewels bear witness to the remarkable sophistication of the Etruscan civilization. We enjoy the magnetism of the city before driving back to our country house.

Day 5 – Siena – Monteriggioni

Today we reach Siena by private transfer. Siena is one of Italy’s most enchanting cities with its famous square, the Piazza del Campo, the Duomo, a great mixture of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, and its medieval treasures.

We explore the delightful medieval city and in the afternoon we continue by private bus to the small village of Monteriggioni before reaching our country house.

Day 6 – Val D’Orcia

Walking - easy 3 hrs
This morning we drive to the Val D’Orcia, a World Heritage Site. The Val D’Orcia is an outstanding expression of the way the landscape was created in Renaissance times to reflect the ideals of good governance and to create aesthetically pleasing images.

We take time to enjoy a short sightseeing walking tour in the simply spellbinding village of Pienza. From the village of San Quirico d’Orcia, one of the most important stops on the Via Francigena pilgrimage we start our relaxing walk along a gentle country back road, visiting a small vineyard where we have the opportunity of a wine tasting.

Our walk takes us to the unique spa town of Bagno Vignoni: here the main square is a scenic ornamental pool built by the Medici Family. We can enjoy a refreshing bath in the many Etruscan water channels that surround the old watermills just outside of the centre before taking our way back to our farmhouse. Here the quiet garden beckons us to relax prior to dinner at our farmhouse.

Day 7 – Departure

Today we say ‘arrivederci’ to our hosts and slowly leave the Tuscan landscape, driving towards Florence.
From your centrally-located Florence hotel you can once again explore the city. The cultural capital of the Renaissance and ancient capital of Tuscany, the town has preserved its antique beauty.

The Duomo, a grand Cathedral that dominates the city centre with Brunelleschi's cupola is the most characteristic feature of the Florentine skyline, symbolising a great cultural tradition and the city's civic awareness.

Not far from the Palazzo Vecchio, the elegant town hall built in the 13th century for the city’s republican government, stands the richest art gallery in the world: the Uffizi, with fabulous paintings by Michelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio.

The Ponte Vecchio, a medieval bridge on the river Arno is renowned for jewellers’ shops and with the Colosseum, is probably the most typical background used for thousands of shots about trips in Italy.

Umbria & Tuscany Overview

The ‘green heart’ of Italy has a special place in many Around The Sun journeys. Umbria has the gems of Perugia and Assisi, Orvieto and Spoleto, as well as countless other picturesque, but lesser known, towns and villages. There are beautiful rolling hills, dotted with villas - a landscape that casts a unique spell over anyone lucky enough to soak it up. Walking is the perfect way to explore (and Around The Sun has some great walking tours).

The iconic Toscana (Tuscany) region is always included in whistle stop tours of Italy because it includes Florence and Siena and was a key beneficiary of the Renaissance proliferation of art and architecture under powerful patrons like the Medicis. The steep hills of the eastern and central part of the region latticed by olive groves and vineyards also lend themselves to walking tours.

Some key, iconic Tuscan sights are also included in Italia with Lucrezia - History, Food & Wine which is a car-based in depth cultural tour.

Around The Sun’s Enchanting Tuscany trip features some of the most beautiful Tuscan countryside and towns and is a combination of sightseeing, easy to moderate walks, great food and wine, and character-full accommodation.
